“I’m almost 40. Is it too late to start my dream business?”
I get this question all the time. You’re craving to start your own business, do work you’re passionate about, and make a ton of money in the process.
But, after working for someone else all your life, you have no idea where to even start. You don’t have the experience. Or the qualifications. Or enough time. All the entrepreneurs you admire started their businesses in their teens! The entrepreneurial train has so passed you by…
Truth bomb: it’s not too late to jump on board. Research shows that a 50-year-old entrepreneur is almost twice as likely as a 30-year old to start a successful business!
Age isn’t an obstacle. If anything, it’s an advantage. Here’s why:
1. You Have More Life Experience
I see this all the time in women: we’re so obsessed with paper qualifications that we forget all the life experiences and skills we’ve already accumulated over the years.
A lot of them are transferable. Heck, the reason you had those life experiences and gained those skills is because you’re meant to use them in your business.
I’m living proof of this. For most of my life, I’ve jumped from one business idea to another, without a clue what I was really meant to do with my life.
Back then, I thought I was flaky. Now, I realise I had to go through all those career changes to learn how to find my life purpose and start businesses so I could teach other women how to do the same.
FYI, I was already doing that a long time before I became a coach! Every time a friend complained about her soul-sucking job, I’d helped her figure out what her passion is and give her the tools to monetise it.
Be honest now: would you rather work with someone who learned the theory at school or who’s been there and done what you want to achieve and has a proven record of helping others to do the same?
I’m not saying qualifications aren’t important. I’ve trained at the Transformation Academy, so I got a certification on top of life experience.
But don’t discount all the skills, passions, and experiences you already have. You’re more qualified than you give yourself credit for.
2. You Have A Bigger Network
Who you know matters more than what you know.
You can be the best at what you do, but without the right connections, you’ll struggle to find the right vendors, get publicity, hire a team, etc.
Not to mention, every business starts with word of mouth. Forget about Instagram lives and Vogue ads. Every business owner gets her first few clients from their personal network.
I always recommend my clients to send an email out to EVERYONE they know telling them about their new venture. Make an announcement on your personal Facebook page. Update your Linkedin profile.
The more people you know, the higher the chance someone will know someone who needs your services or can help you out with bookkeeping, web design and anything else you need to build a thriving business.
3. You’ve Failed More Often
The older you are, the more failures you’ve had. Believe it or not, this is a good thing.
Every failure is a lesson learned. They taught you what you don’t like, the importance of hard work, how to set goals, and to always be prepared.
Plus, I’m sure you’re less afraid of failure now than you used to be in your early ’20s. When you’re young, every failure seems like the end of the world.
Now that you’re a little older and wiser, you know that nothing is final. You can always get back on your feet and try again.

4. You’re More Financially Secure
Can I tell you a secret? No one has the money to start a business stashed under the mattress.
But, you’ve probably have some savings in your bank account or easier access to credit. You may even have a better paying job than you did in your 20s, so you can pay all your bills and still have some extra money left over to start investing in your business.
Even if you never use them, knowing you have money you can access at times of need gives you the peace of mind you need to go all in with your business.
But what if you got high expenses, like mortgage, your children’s education, or student loan debt? You can totally still start a business.
If anything, your financial responsibilities will force you to focus only on the business tasks that move the needle forward, so you can achieve the results you want without wasting precious time and money you don’t have.
5. You Know What Your Life Purpose Is
The most successful business ideas come from your life purpose.
When you know what you’re here on this planet to do and how to best use your skills and passions to serve the people only you can help, the perfect business idea naturally manifest itself. You know you’ll be successful because you are in your zone of genius.
It’s a lot easier to find your life purpose when you’re older. Purpose leaves clues:
- Your childhood dreams
- The things you love to do in your free time
- The skills you’ve accumulated along the way
- The struggles you’ve overcome
- The causes close to your heart
- The “coincidences” that happened at the right time
When you’re fresh out of school, you often don’t have enough clues to follow. You may have an idea of what you’re passionate about, but chances are you still have a few skills to learn and a few struggles to go through before you can recognise your purpose AND have all the tools you need to pursue it.
