Can you really have a multi-passionate business?
I spent more than a decade starting one niche business after another because I thought that was the only way to make money. Don’t you just confuse people when you try to do all the things?
Until one day, I stumbled onto a Youtube video in which a big-haired, hip-hop-loving girl named Marie Forleo proudly proclaimed to be a “multi-passionate entrepreneur.”
So, other people were doing it! Since that day, wherever I turned online, I saw multi-passionate creatives doing all the things. They were fulfilled, they were successful, and they were making a lot of money without putting themselves in a box.
At first, I thought they were special snowflakes. They obviously had something I didn’t.
They were more talented than me. Had a secret trust fund stashed away somewhere. Were at the right place at the right time and got a lucky break.
You know, all the excuses we make up in our head when we’re too scared to pursue our dreams.
If you think the people you admire are special, you’re off the hook. You can go back to playing it safe. It’s not your fault your dream isn’t coming true. You just don’t have [insert special excuse].
But, there are a few things that the people who have a multi-passionate business have in common. They’re the secret sauce that makes them succeed when so many others fail.
Curious? Here are what the people who have a multi-passionate business do that you don’t:
1. Surround Yourself With Positive People
People who have a multi-passionate business that allows them to do all the things they love don’t have Negative Nancies in their lives.
Sure, they meet sceptics who tell them they don’t have what it takes to start a business or that multi-passionate ventures are destined to fail. But they don’t listen to them. They don’t hang out with them often. They don’t allow them in their close circles of friends.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “you’re the average of the 5 people you spend your time with”.
If you hang out with people who think multi-passionate businesses can’t be successful, their negative mentality will rub off on you.
The opposite is true, too. If surround yourself with people who have a multi-passionate business, you’ll start thinking it’s possible for you, too.
Don’t know anyone who’s building a multi-passionate business? Join a club. Or a Facebook group. Go to networking events. Get yourself out there and you’ll find your tribe.
2. Build A Growth Mindset
If you don’t believe you can have a multi-passionate business, you’ll never take the first step to make it happen.
And it’s so easy to believe you can’t do it. From an early age, we’ve been told dreams are for dreamers. In real life, you go to school, get a job – any job -, and thank your lucky stars you get a paycheck at the end of every month.
The bigger the paycheck, the better. Your worth is measured on your net worth, how big your house is, and how many Jimmy Choos you have in your closet.
The worst part? Even when you get there, you still feel miserable. Fancy shoes and a mansion in Malibu don’t bring you happiness and fulfilment. Dedicating your life to doing what you love does.
But how do you unlearn years of conditioning that only special snowflakes can build a multi-passionate business?
Think of someone who’s doing what you’d love to do. If they can do it, it means it’s possible for you, too.
Read their biographies. Listen to inspiring podcasts. Take a self-help course. Hire a coach. Hang out with people who are making their dreams come true (yep, that again!).
The more you feed your brain with inspirational success stories, the sooner you’ll start to believe it’s possible for you, too.
3. Align Your Actions With Your Calling
Think of the big multi-passionate entrepreneurs you admire, like Marie Forleo. They didn’t get to the top because they said they were gonna pursue their dreams and then binge watched Stranger Things on Netflix.
They followed through on when they said they were gonna do. That’s the next step. Align your actions with your calling. Figure out what you need to do to make it happen and put it in your calendar. Then do it.
Turn off your notification. Tell your friend you will call her back in a couple of hours. Don’t let anything distract you.
You only have one life. Use it to fulfill your dreams, not what everyone else expects of you.
