Do you ever panic you won’t be able to do everything you want to do in this lifetime?
Multi-passionates aren’t meant to do just one thing forever. You have lots of different passions, skills, and talents because you’re meant to use them all.
You’re meant to write the book. Start the business. Create the podcast. Sell a gazillion different products. Pivot a few times along the way.
But, knowing you can do everything doesn’t make the panic go away.
Now you have permission to go ahead, all your fears are coming to the surface. What if you fail? What if it is too hard? And isn’t it selfish to go after your dreams?
Here are the top 5 obstacles that keep multi-passionate stuck in panic mode, unable to pursue their (many) dreams:
1. You’re Overcomplicating Things
When you had the idea to start freelance writing, it all seemed so simple. Find someone who needs articles for their blog and get paid for it.
Then someone told you you need a business plan. And a fancy website. And a thousand followers on Instagram. The list goes on and on.
A simple project has now grown so big, it’s overwhelming. Do you really want to do all that – especially when you know that half the things on that list are as much fun as banging your head against a wall?
Start small. Shrink the size of your project to what you really want to do now.
What does that look like?
What do you need to get started?
You don’t need to build the entire house now. Focus on laying the foundation. The next step will naturally appear.
2. You’re Afraid Of Criticism
What if you start and it doesn’t work out? What if you get bored of it and quit? What if you make a mistake and fail miserably in front of the whole world?
You feel like all eyes are on you, anxiously watching your every move. The slightest mistake is enough for them to ridicule you. Criticise you. Reject you.
You try to be perfect, but nothing you do is ever good enough. Sometimes, it feels safe just to give up and do nothing…
People WILL criticise you. Whether you go for your dreams and succeed, or go for your dreams and fail, or don’t go for your dreams at all.
Whatever you do, there’ll always be someone who doesn’t like it and feels entitled to let you know about it.
So choose to go for your dreams. You have one life. Don’t waste it trying to please people who can’t be pleased.
The right people will always be in your corner, supporting you and cheering you on even when you make a mistake.
3. You’re Afraid Of Success
This seems paradoxical. How can you be scared of success? Of your dreams coming true?
Yet, it’s a common fear for multi-passionates. When you succeed at something, people want you to do more of it.
But you don’t. You’ve achieved that dream and are ready to move onto the next. But, what if people don’t follow you? If your clients leave you, if your fans abandon you?
Achieving success feels like putting yourself in a box you can never get out of – not without losing everything you’ve gained.
Why do the work if it’s not going to last?
It’s true people want to put you in a box – but you don’t have to stay there.
With success come more opportunities to explore, more money to support yourself while you pivot, more connections that’ll help you find your new audience faster.
The more successful you get, the more dreams you can achieve – faster and easier too.
4. You Don’t Feel Worthy Of Doing What You Want
So many people in the world never get to do what they love. They get a job to pay the bills and… get stuck there.
Who are you to do what you love – multiple times over? Shouldn’t you just take care of your family instead? Make sure everyone around you is happy and has everything they need – and then, if you have time, maybe dedicate yourself to a passion project?
Putting yourself and your dreams first seems so… radical.
Doing what you love isn’t a privilege. It’s a duty.
When you do what you love, you inspire other people to do the same. You show them their dreams are possible too and it’s not dangerous to go after that.
You’re also happier, calmer, less reactive. You’re more fun to be around. You have more resources to support your family, help your friends, support the causes close to your heart.
Everyone wins when you do work you love.
5. You Don’t Know Where To Start
You have a long list of dreams and projects to explore. You know you can do them all, but… where do you start?
What if you pick the wrong thing and get bored within a couple of months?
What if you pick something too hard and get stuck on it too long?
And what about the gazillion other things you want to do at the same time?
You don’t know what to choose and so, you choose nothing.
Start with the project that excites you the most… and scares you at the same time. That’s a sign it’s part of your life purpose, not just another nice thing to do.
Start there and see where that leads you. The truth is, you can’t choose wrong. Clarity comes from engaging in something, not thinking about it.
As you start working on it, the next step will show up. And then the next. And the next.
Life always leads towards your purpose, towards the dreams you’re meant to accomplish.
Dare to follow them.
