Do multi-passionates have a calling?
I believe they do… just not in the traditional sense.
Multi-passionates don’t have a one true calling, one thing to do for the rest of their life. (Can we heave a sigh of relief? I mean, how boring would that be?!).
They’re called to do lots of different things, work on different projects, and constantly reinvent themselves.
The only question is: what project are you meant to be working on NOW? What are you called to create in this season of your life?
Here are 3 exercises to help you discover your current calling when you’re multi-passionate:
1. Write Your Ted Talk
Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to do public speaking (unless that’s your dream of course – then go for it).
I just want you to imagine being on stage in front of thousands of people. What life lesson would you share? What’s one thing you wish people knew to dramatically improve their lives? What message do they need to hear to shake them into positive action?
Write the script for your speech. That one idea is your current purpose, the seed of your business idea.
2. Visualise Your Future Self
Your mind gets stuck thinking of all the things you could do. You have so many passions to pursue. Things you’re good at. New interests to explore. How do you not get overwhelmed by all the options?
Your intuition has the answer. Deep down, you know what you’re meant to do now. You just let your mind talk yourself out of it because, “what if I pick the wrong thing and I fail?”
Here’s how to get in touch with your intuition:
Find a quiet place and sit (or lie) down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and pick one business idea you’d love to pursue. Then, visualise every detail of that future:
- What tasks are you doing every day?
- Who are you working with (clients, employees, mentors…)?
- How much money are you making?
- What work opportunities are you getting?
- Where are you living?
- What projects are you currently working on?
- What are you doing in your free time?
Then, ask yourself: how does it feel?
Is it a whole body yes, “OMG I can’t wait to do this”? Go ahead and get started. You’re totally meant to do this.
Does it feel wrong, like you’re not enjoying it as much as you think you would? Let it go. If even thinking about it makes you miserable, doing it will make you feel worse.
Do you feel mostly happy, but there’s something there that’s not quite right? You’re on the right track, but you need to change some details a little.
That’s the power of visualisation. You get to experience what your calling will feel like before taking action, so you won’t waste precious time and money on the wrong things.
3. Turn Your Struggle Into Your Purpose
Your purpose is often linked to your struggles.
When you’ve been to hell and back, you don’t want anyone else to experience the same thing ever again. And now that you’re on the other side, you can use what you’ve learned to help others.
Your struggle can be big or small, it doesn’t matter. It isn’t about size. It’s about helping people overcome a problem.
Maybe you’ve recovered from an eating disorder and now you want to help other people heal.
Maybe you’ve been able to pay off a large debt and now you’re committed to helping others do the same.
Maybe, like me, you’ve been feeling lost and confused for years, not knowing what to do with your life, and now you’re called to help women find clarity and start the right business for them.
Whatever you went through, there’s someone else going through the same thing right now. Go help them.
Why These Exercises Work
These exercises work because they help you narrow down what’s the most important thing to you right now. That’s your calling, your purpose in this season of your life. Your passions are just the tools you were given to pursue your calling.
It’s not about choosing one passion over all others. It’s about making the most of your passions and treasures, so you can help people in the way only you can.
And when that calling has been fulfilled, come back to these exercises and find out what you’re meant to do next. You’re here to do more than just one thing. Never forget that.
The Bottom Line
Forget about your passions for a minute. Focus on finding your purpose, that thing that sets your soul on fire right now and pursue that. Once you’ve found it, use all your passions to fulfil it. Repeat as many times as you need to. Your world needs all of your treasures.
