Do you ever feel behind in life, like at your age there’s so much more you should have accomplished already?
All your friends are getting married and having babies while you’re still single and wondering if you’ll ever find the one.
Your parents constantly remind you they had already bought the family house at your age, while you’re still renting a flat with a couple of friends.
You keep hearing of old schoolmates who quit their jobs to start their businesses, while you’re still trapped in a soul-sucking job, dreaming of doing something better but… what?
When you compare your life to what everyone else is doing, you can’t help but feel you’re so behind.
… Are you?
Why Do You Feel Behind In Life?
How can you NOT feel behind in life in the age of Instagram?
You’re trying to do your thing and go after your goals, but everywhere you turn, people seem to be doing much better than you.
Your friend has just got a promotion. That new coach came out of nowhere and made 6 figures in her first year. Everyone has a Pinterest perfect house, the perfect relationship, and perfect kids.
And they’re doing all this at a younger and younger age. Success used to be a long-term game. Now, if you don’t have your entire life figured out in your 20s, society makes you feel like such a loser.
You buy into the idea that this is the norm and so you start to question what you’re doing wrong. Why don’t you have it already?
In the process, you forget that a lot of these things you’re supposed to achieve by a certain age don’t really matter. They were never your dreams.
You Are On Your Journey
I totally fall into this trap too. In the past year, my younger sister bought a house and had a baby. Meanwhile, I’m still renting a flat, have no kids, and have just started a new business.
As the eldest child, I thought I should have hit those milestones before her. Why hadn’t I? Where had I gone wrong?
I had never gone wrong. I had gone a different way.
When I dug deeper, I realised I don’t want to own a house. Not now, anyway. Renting gives me the freedom to live wherever I want – and in my dream neighbourhood it’s cheaper, too.
I’m also not ready for a family. Right now, my focus is on growing The Treasures Within community and helping as many women as I can find and live their life purpose. This is my life’s work and if I have to hit society’s milestones a bit later to achieve it, then I’m ok with that.
There’s no official timeline you have to follow. We’re all on our own journey.
How To Measure Success
If we’re all on our own journey, how do you know if you’re right on track or have fallen behind?
FYI, I don’t believe people can ever be behind in life. At any point, you’re exactly where you need to be.
But, there are ways to measure success and know if you’re in alignment with your vision or if you’ve taken a detour (that’s totally fine – every wrong turn is a lesson to learn).
You’re in alignment when:
- You feel happy and fulfilled on a regular basis: You don’t compare yourself to other people because you know you’re doing what you were born to do. You’re pursuing your purpose, helping people, and living life on your own terms.
- You’ve found your tribe: You’ve attracted people in your life who love and support you no matter what.
- You’re healthy: You love yourself and take good care of yourself – physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
This is what happens when you follow your purpose and your dreams. Life just flows.
How To Stop Feeling Behind In Life
What if you’re not there right now? That’s ok. You’re on your own journey.
Feeling behind is part of that journey, the push you need to fix what’s not working and get back into alignment with your purpose.
Here’s what to do to stop feeling behind in life:
1. Get Clear On What You Want
Money, fame, designer clothes, luxury holidays, a sexy husband and a white picket fence. This is what society says you should want. But… what do YOU really want?
Why are you here on this planet? What do you want to achieve? Who do you want to help? Where do you want to live? Who do you want to be in a relationship with?
If you’re not clear on what you want, you’ll just chase what everyone else says you should want… and constantly feel behind.
Get clear on what your goals are and pursue them relentlessly. Compare yourself only to where you used to be yesterday. When you’re working towards your dreams, you can never fall behind.

2. Be Grateful
Gratitude is the quickest way I know to get over the “I’m so behind in life” mentality.
We’re so busy chasing all the things we don’t have yet that we forget everything we have already achieved.
Take the time to practice gratitude every day. Be grateful for all the things you already have, like your house, your car, and the food on the table. Celebrate your past accomplishments and the goals you’ve already reached.
Find a way to be grateful for all the challenges you’re currently experiencing, too. What’s the lesson in them?
Gratitude puts things in perspective and makes you realise how far ahead you are already.
3. Make A Plan
Are you already clear on your goals but you can’t seem to find a way to get there? You feel like they should have happened already, but you’re SO behind schedule.
Time to make a plan, gorgeous. Winging it doesn’t work. Ok, sometimes it can work, but it’ll take you way longer to get results.
Instead of trying to do everything on your own, ask for help from people who have done it already. What steps did they take? What worked for them?
Break down your big goals into smaller steps and do them!
There’s no secret here. Success happens when you take consistent and aligned action every day. Do the right things and you’ll get there.
It’s normal to feel behind in life, but you really can’t compare someone else’s journey to yours. Everyone’s story unfolds in their own time and pace. Enjoy the journey, gorgeous. You’re right on track for achieving your unique purpose.
