Just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there’s love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.
Are you doing what you love today?
FYI, I’m not talking just about your job. Turning your passion into your career is the dream. One you should pursue relentlessly.
But, let’s be honest here: not everyone can quit their job point blank to start a business/become a writer/do what they dream of doing.
Life doesn’t work that way. You have bills to pay. Commitments you can’t break. People who rely on you for support.
How can you do what you love when you’re stuck in a job that sucks all the joy out of your life?
Truth bomb: Just because you’re not doing what you love for a living, it doesn’t mean you can’t do what you love every day.
Your job isn’t your entire life. Here are 4 ways to do what you love, starting right now:
1. Change Your Mindset
You can’t always change your circumstances. But you can change the way you think about them.
Let’s say you can’t quit your job right now. Instead than focusing on all the things you hate about it, why not find something to be grateful for?
You can be grateful you have a job that allows you to pay the bills and put food on the table. You can be grateful your job provides you with extra money to invest in your side hustle. You can be grateful for having nice coworkers you can have a laugh with.
You can find meaning in your job, too. Think of all the ways you’re helping people every day.
Working at Nordstrom? You can take pride in helping women find the best clothes for their body type. Are you a hospital janitor? Think of all the patients who’d catch random infections if you didn’t keep the place clean. Joined a call center? You have the chance of helping people solve their problems and make their day.
It doesn’t matter how small or boring a job is. What you do matters.
2. Incorporate What You Love Into Your Job
Maybe you can’t quit your day job to chase your dreams just yet. But how can you incorporate parts of your dream career into your current job?
If you dream of becoming a public speaker, for example, you can ask your boss to do more presentations. If you’re into fashion, you can play around with your work outfits. If you love teaching, you can train new employees. You get the drift.
Ask yourself, “what would make work more fun for me?” Then do it.
3. Start A Side Hustle
Are you thinking of quitting your job to pursue your dream, but are not sure your idea will take off?
Test the waters first. The best way to do it is as a side hustle. It’s simpler than you think.
Let’s say you want to become a social media manager. Instead than quitting your job, creating a stunning website, and printing business cards, focus on finding 3 paying clients.
Ask your friends if they know someone who needs your services. Go to networking events where your potential clients are. Be active in Facebook groups where your target audience hangs out.
Once you’ve validated your idea and the money starts rolling in, you can set up everything else you need. Or you may decide it’s not for you after all. Wouldn’t you rather know that before you go all in?
4. Do What You Love As A Hobby
Who said you have to turn every passion into your day job?
That’s not always feasible. I love owls, but I doubt anyone will ever pay me to take care of them…
Even if you can turn your passion into a career, do you really want to? Let’s say you love singing. Are you so passionate about it you’re willing to make any sacrifice to make a living singing? Or is it just something you like to do in your spare time? If so, sing as a hobby.
Some passions lose all their magic and become chores when you try to turn them into a career.
That’s when you know they’re better off as a hobbies. Pursue them in your free time. Take a class or join a club where you can meet people with the same interests as you. Volunteer your gifts to a charity that’s close to your heart.
It doesn’t matter if you get paid for it or not. Filling you life with things you love to do – that’s the key to happiness.
